Chapter one
The moon was high and Lunarkit was outside of the Tearclan camp. Her yellow eyes were reflecting against the dead, dry grass. Her head turned ubruptly as she heard a scruffle in the distance. She slowly krept forward, keeping low to the ground, then pounced. It had been a slow, fat mouse that she had spotted. It had no chance. "I should be getting back to camp." Lunarkit looked up at the sky, which was slowly turning pink. She turned and started to walk back, with her head held high and her chest puffed out. As she held the mouse in her mouth. As she entered the camp she heard a familiar voice of her mother Mossmouth."My kit. My kit has returned!" She started to nuzzle Lunarkit. "You had me worried sick. You could have been killed." Mossmouth said as her voice slowly turned sturn. Lunerkit dropped her mouse."I'm sorry momma. I really wanted to go outside of the camp." "I know. I know. But you know you can't leave the camp until your an apprentice." Mossmouth said. "I caught a mouse." Lunarkit squealed. "That's great, but you still are in trouble." "What is going to happen?" Lunarkit trembled. "That's not up to me. That's up to Winterstar or Icemoon." "Oh." "Why don't you go and put your mouse in the fresh kill pile, then go to bed." "Ok momma." Lunarkit picked up her mouse, then slumped over to the fresh kill pile. After placing her mouse into the pile she walked over to the nursery dragging her paws. Lunarkit plopped onto the warm, dry moss. She felt trapped in the camp, she needed to getr out into the fresh air. As her thoughts ran, she slowly found herself falling into a deep sleep.
Chapter 2
"Wake up."There was a short pause, then the voice growled."Wake up." Someone was nudging her in the back. She started to sleepily blink her eyes open and turned around to see Mossmouth was the one nudging her. The voice was Batstone. "Come on. I don't have all moon to wait for you. Time to go and get your punishment."Batstone growled. "Ok." Lunarkit stuttered. She shakely stood up. Not sure what was going to happen. Batstone led her to a small alcove that was dug into a rock wall. Batstone nodded for her to stay outside and, then started to walk into the pitch black cave. Several moments later, she saw a dark figure approaching from the shadows of the cave. "You may enter." Slowly she entered the cave, tail between her legs and not looking up from the ground. Then out of nowhere cold shot down here spine like lightning. There was an evil feeling coming from the cave, something was not right. But she couldn't pin point it. So she just shrugged it of. Finally she saw light. Well it was really lite. It was more like a hole in the ceiling, that had been covered in bramble. But standing in the light was one of the worst things she could have asked for. It was not only Winterstar, but also Icemoon. "Batstone, you may leave."Winterstone commanded. Lunarkit couldn't help, but gulp in fear. "Lunarkit."He said sharply."You left the camp before you were six moons old and at night. What led you to do this?" "I don't know. I was in the nursery and the next thing I knew i was catching a mouse." "Really. Well that still doesn't change your punishment" Icemoon said. "I know. And i really am sorry." "We know, but your punishment will be that you will have to care for the elders from this point forward until i say you can stop." Winterstar demanded. "You may leave." As Lunarkitleft the cave, she gave a sigh of relief. Instead of going to the nursery she veered of to the right towards the elders den. When she entered the den she heard whispering, but as soon as she was in sight they stopped. "First you check for ticks." Wingtail whispered. "Thanks. Do any of you have ticks." "No. Not today." "Ok then." Lunarkit turned around and left the den to get the moss. After she was done with the moss Lunarkit went and got a sparrow from the fresh kill pile. She gulped it down, not having the energy to eat it slowly. Then she crawled into her bed in the nursery. And fell asleep.
Lunarkit stood up, but she wasn't in the nursery anymore. Actually. She had no clue where she was. "Lunarkit." "Who said that?" "It is I, Crookedwing. You do not know me. For I am one of your warrior ancestors and i have a message for you. Your clan is not safe. A new prophecy is on it's way. When Everyone loses hope. The smallest of the small will lead the way." "What does that mean?" But it was already too late. He was gone.
Chapter 3
Lunarkit woke with a jolt. The sun was still barely over the horizon, the sky splashed with pinks and purples. Nobody was awake yet, except for the patrol about to go out and hunt. Lunarkit rolled over and tried to go back to sleep, but she was still in shock from the dream. She had to go and talk to Juniperwing about it. Lunarkit stood up and sleepily walked out of the nursery. She started to head towards the medicine den. When nearing it, Lunarkit could smell the heavy stench of yarrow. Lunarkit wasn't even 2 tail-lengths away from the den when she heard a soft, sweet voice."Come in." She slowly padded in, her pawsteps echoeing. For the medicine den was a lot like the Winterstars den, except with more light. Juniperwing turned around."Oh. What do you need Lunarkit?" "I need to talk to you about a dream i had last night." "Ok. Why don't you come and sit down." Juniperwing led her to a small alcove in the cave where some moss was placed. After sitting down she said."So why don't you tell me about this dream you had." "Well. I was somewhere i have never seen before and i met this strange cat named Crookedwing and he said that the clan was in grave danger. He said that when everyone loses hope. The smallest of the small will lead the way." There was a short pause. "I do not know what that means. But i will talk it over with Winterstar. Then i will tell you what i know." "Ok."Lunarkit stood up and started to walk out of the cave. Instead of going to the nursery, Lunarkit decided to get some fresh kill. This time she ate it slowly, still thinking about the dream. As Lunarkit was finishing her vole she saw the patrol returning with scarcely any food. This was already a terrible leaf-bare They had lost three kits and an elder to whitecough. But now there was scarcely any prey. What were they going to do if they lost a warrior?
The day went on. Lunarkit tended to the elders amd did nothing else. She seemed to be the only one who noticed the sky was getting darker. But not from the night, but from the clouds. As Lunarkit grabbed a wood pecker from the fresk kill pile a snowflake fell. But no one payed any attentiont to the snow. It was normal and good for the land. Lunarkit had gulped down half of the prey she had taken when, the next thing she knew was that all she could see was white. The snow was coming down to fast for Lunarkit to get inside a den. She was now up to her chest in snow. Everyone around her was scrambling to get inside. She tried to squeal for help, but she was already to cold to make a sound. Slowly everything started to turn black, except she heard a soft sweet voice soothing her to stay awake. Then nothing.
Chapter 4
When Lunarkit awoke, she could feel the rythmic breathing of a cat next to her. When she attempted to turn around, she let out a moan of pain, for her joints were as stiff as rocks. "Don't move."She heard the cat whisper. It was the cat with the soft, sweet voice. The cat stood up and pawed some herbs for her to eat. Lunarkit was in to much pain to refuse. They tasted awful, it was very bitter. "These will help your joints loosen up and the poppy seeds will help you sleep." After Lunarkit had eaten all of the herbs the cat layed down next to her. She was to tired and stiff to figure out who it was. So she just closed her eyes and slept.
When she awoke once more, she found she could stand up. Not for very long, but it was more than before. The cat that had been there earlier was still asleep next to her. It was Juniperwing. Lunarkit wasn't sure what to do now, so she nudged Juniperwing awake.
"Seems like someone is doing better."She yawned. "Yah. But I still am a little bit achy." "You will be for about a week. But i promise. It will get better." "How long do i have to stay here?" "You can leave as soon as i check you for any signs of sickness." Juniperwing stood up and started to poke and prode Lunarkit."You seem fine. But if anything seems wrong come and tell me right away. Ok." "OK." Lunarkit started to hobble outside. The snow had gone down quiet a bit since the accident. As Lunarkit stepped outside a sea of cats started to swarm around her. Nudging her and purring their hearts out, as relief flooded them all. "Let her get back to her den."A voice boomed. It was Winterstar up on the high rock. Feeling slightly embaressed, Lunarkit hobbled back to the nursery to find her Mossmouth at the enterance. "Oh, your all right! That is the second time i've been worried sick about you. Anymore and i might have a heart attack." Mossmouth exclaimed. "I know mommy." "Come lay down next to me." Lunarkit followed her mom to her next and snuggled as close as she could get to her mom and fell asleep. Only to have another dream.
"Lunarkit."A soft voice meowed."Lunarkit you have to listen to me. That storm was only one of the many things that are going to happen to Tearclan." "What do you mean?" "Your clan is in grave danger. When everyone loses hope, The smallest of the small will lead the way." Before Lunarkit could even say another word the cat was gone.
Chapter 5
Lunarkit woke up. She just sat there thinking. Today she was six moons old. That meant that she would become an apprentice."I wonder who Winterstar will choose. Maybe Leafdawn. She strong and wise, but she hasn't been the same since Kindlepaw died."Lunarkit thought.
She sat there for a few moments. Then Tortiosepaw stuck his head into the den."Winterstar wants to see you."
Lunarkit quickly stood up and followed him."You know where his den is."
She quickly nodded her head.
"Then go."
"Ok. Thank you."
She quickly headed to the cave. When she reached it she called in."It's Lunarkit."
"Come in. I have some very good news for you. As you know. It is your sixth moon. So that means that you can become an apprentice."There was a short pause."Your cerimony will be held at sunhigh."
"Thank you."She bowed her head and left.
"Let all cats old enough to catch thier own prey join me beneath the high ledge."
Everyone started to file out of thier dens, as Lunarkit went to stand next to Winterstar.
"I gather you here today because Lunarkit has reached her sixth moon."There was a short pause."Lunarkit, from this day until you recieve your warrior name you will be known as Lunarpaw. I ask our great warrior ancestors of moonclan to watch over you and guide you until you in your paws, find the strenth and courage of a warrior."
Everyone started to chant Lunarpaw's name.
"Leafdawn, you mentored Kindlepaw and losing her was a tragity. But will you accept Lunarpaw as your new apprentice?"
"Yes."
"Teach her everything you know. She's in your paws now,"
"Thank you."
They stepped together to touch noses. Lunarpaw shone with pride. After everyone left Lunarpaw asked,"When are we going to go out?"
"Maybe tomorrow. I think you should settle down in your new den first."
"Ok."Lunarpaw started for the apprentice's den. But when she laid down she was too tired to sleep. So she just laid there until sleep consumed her.
