Sharpclaw padded out of the warriors den, the mist of the gorge cooling his fur.  The ginger tom leapt swiftly across the boulders leading to the leader's den.  A surge of pride shot through him as he neared the entrance.  "Leafstar?" he called.  The pretty tabby she-cat lifted her head sleepily and smiled.  Sharpclaw's heart started to pound, but he attempted to keep his voice even.  "I was wondering about patrols.  I was thinking we should double them on the northern border, just to monitor those rogues we've been having trouble with."

Leafstar nodded in approval.  "Yes, that sounds good."  She locked eyes with her deputy.  "Thank you, Sharpclaw."

The tom smiled slightly and dipped his head in respect.  He turned with a heavy heart and began to walk out of the cave when Leafstar called to him again.  "Sharpclaw, wait."

Sharpclaw whipped around and stared at the she-cat in confusion and excitement.  "Yes, Leafstar?" he managed to stutter.

The SkyClan leader padded up to him and looked down at her paws.  "I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me going on patrol with you.  It feels like forever since I've had a good hunt."

Sharpclaw's heart leapt with joy.  Hunting with Leafstar was like hunting with StarClan themselves!  Containing himself, he nodded curtly and bounded out of the den with high spirits.

"What in the name of StarClan is with you?" hissed Cherrytail playfully.

"What?" Sharpclaw asked confused.

Sparrowpelt snorted with amusement.  "You're as cheerful as a field mouse!"

Sharpclaw flattened his ears in embarrassment.  Was his affection for Leafstar showing?  And if it was, how obvious was it?  Immediately, the ginger tom straightened up and looked around at his Clanmates.  "Never mind, we need to get patrols sorted out.  Cherrytail, Patchfoot you and your apprentices will be on dawn patrol.  Make sure you check the northern border thoroughly, just in case those rogues decided to come back."

"Ha!" snorted Cherrytail, flicking her tail with amusement.  "If they do come back, they've got to be the most mouse-brained cats who ever lived!"

"Well, we need to check the border just in case."  He glared at the young she-cat sternly.  "Now, we can have a few hunting patrols.  How about, Clovertail, Sparrowpelt, and Tinypaw, you can be one and that leaves..."

"That leaves just you and me," purred Leafstar; her sudden appearance making Sharpclaw jump.  She stood next to her deputy, her tabby pelt shining in the sunlight.  Sharpclaw's heart went wild once more, his head spun from intoxication from her sweet scent.

"Right," he said, shaking his head.  "Well, let's be off."  Leafstar padded in front of the dark tom, flicking her tail for Sharpclaw to follow.  "So," he mewed quietly, "where shall we hunt?"

"Hmm...perhaps by the stream?"  Leafstar glanced at Sharpclaw swiftly.

The SkyClan deputy nodded and headed off toward the stream, letting his leader stay just a few pawsteps in front of him.

"It's strange, isn't it?" Leafstar suddenly muttered.

Sharpclaw flicked his ears questioningly.  "What is?"

Leafstar smiled weakly.  "It seems like so long ago that we all lived separate lives.  I never imagined I would ever live like this, not to mention become a leader."

"Yeah, me neither.  I had forgotten what it was like to live with other cats; I had been alone for so long."

"Me too."  The brown and cream tabby stopped and flicked her tail, instructing Sharpclaw to stay still.  She stalked forward, her ears erect and alert.  Then, as quick as lightning, she lunged forward, trapping a mouse in her paws.  She swiftly killed it with one blow and scraped it over with dirt.

"Nice catch!" purred Sharpclaw, admiring the she-cat's impressive hunting skills.

Leafstar licked her chest fur in embarrassment.  "Thanks, but it was probably the slowest mouse in the gorge.  It was practically begging to be caught."

Sharpclaw smiled.  "Fresh-kill is fresh-kill."  He flicked her ear gently and padded off into the trees.  Within moments, he brought down a sparrow with a mighty leap.  "You know, sometimes I wonder if these stupid creatures have any sense at all," he purred with amusement as Leafstar padded up to him.

"Now, Sharpclaw," she mewed sternly but playfully.  "Just because the bird isn't as quick witted as you are, doesn't mean we can ignore the warrior code.  Now, thank StarClan for its life."  She winked at him.

Sharpclaw narrowed his eyes and smiled.  "Thank you, StarClan, for this stupid--I mean, lovely bird's life.  I'm sure it will make a delicious meal for our Clan."  He glanced at Leafstar.  "Better?"

The tabby she-cat rolled her eyes.  "I guess."  She flicked his nose and bounded off, with Sharpclaw close on her paws.  When they reached the bank, Leafstar rolled onto the ground, letting the sun warm her belly.

"What are you doing?" meowed Sharpclaw wryly.

"Sunning," she replied, her eyes narrowing into blissful slits.  She patted the ground beside her, inviting the ginger warrior to lie down, also.  Sharpclaw hesitated.  His heart was pounding with excitement.  When he didn't join her, Leafstar opened one eye and looked at him questioningly.  "Well?"

Sharpclaw inhaled sharply and lowered himself down to the soft grass slowly.  He rested his head on the warm ground and breathed in the sweet scent.  He suddenly realized it was the intoxicating scent of Leafstar that was filling his senses.  Opening his eyes slightly, he saw Leafstar, still on her back, bathing in the sun.  A deep purr was coming from her chest and she lazily swept her tail back and forth across the grass.  Sharpclaw lifted his head, desperate to look at the beautiful tabby closer.

Before he knew it, he was looking down on her, his eyes drooping with admiration.  Leafstar slowly opened her eyes, gasping quietly in shock when she saw Sharpclaw, but softened her gaze quickly.  "Why, hello there," she purred.

Sharpclaw laughed quietly.  "Hi," he mewed.  He quickly realized what a fool he was making out of himself.  She must think I'm completely mouse-brained, he thought bitterly.

Quickly, he rose to his paws and opened his mouth to apologize for his behavior when Leafstar silenced him by touching her tail to his mouth.  "Dont," she whispered, letting her tail slide down his back, asking him to lie back down.  Sharpclaw quickly obeyed, scooting closer to her.  Leafstar smiled warmly and looked into his burning eyes.  Their breathing both quickened and Leafstar reached up to lick Sharpclaw on the cheek.

Sharpclaw gasped and Leafstar withdrew quickly.  She looked at him apologetically, but the dark tom just smiled and touched his nose to her ear.  "Dont," he purred, smiling when he felt shivers run through her pelt.  Leafstar pressed her muzzle into his thick ginger fur, breathing in his comforting scent.

"Sharpclaw," she whispered.

"Leafstar?"

She lifted her head and looked back into his eyes.  "Sharpclaw, do...do you love me?"

The ginger furred tom smiled warmly, a deep purr erupting from his chest.  "Of course I do, Leafstar.  I'd be mouse-brained if I didnt."

Leafstar giggled weakly.  "And I'd be mouse-brained if I said that I didn't love you."  She shifted so their faces were no more than a mouse tail length apart.  "I love you, Sharpclaw.  I always have."

"I love you, too, Leafstar.  I've loved you since the moment I saw you."

The tabby she-cat smiled and buried her face into his fur.  Sharpclaw purred happily.  Nothing could ruin this moment.

"Aw, geez!" snickered a voice from the ledge above them.  Sharpclaw and Leafstar whipped their heads up and saw Cherrytail, Rockpaw, Bouncepaw and Patchfoot looking down at them, a huge smile stretched across the tortoiseshell's face.  "Do you have to do this here?" she teased.  "You're going to scare away all the prey!"

Leafstar looked down in embarrassment, resting her head on Sharpclaws shoulder for comfort.  Sharpclaw rasped his tongue over her ear before glaring up at his Clanmates.  "Get out of here," he mouthed, snarling.

Cherrytail snickered and rolled her eyes.  "Come on, Rockpaw.  Let's leave these two lovebirds to their kissy-kissy time."  She flicked her tail, beckoning her Clanmates to follow.

"Mouse-brain," hissed Sharpclaw, his cheeks warm with embarrassment.

Leafstar giggled, licking her companions cheek.  "Well, we can expect the whole of SkyClan to know about us by sunhigh.  We'd better get back to camp if we want everyone to hear what really happened, instead of Cherrytail's exaggerated stories, eh?"  She rose to her paws, shaking the grass from her pelt.  Sharpclaw reluctantly followed, sighing with aggravation that Cherrytail had ruined their perfect moment.

"Now, Sharpclaw," Leafstar purred as she pressed her cheek to his shoulder.  "Don't pout; we still have the whole walk back together."  She winked at him playfully.

He smiled back at her and twined his tail with hers.  "True," he meowed.  "But let's take the long way home, okay?"  Leafstar smiled at him wryly and they padded back toward the camp side by side.
