did the surrounding objects [his clothes, the straw, etc.] have anything to do with the bet?
did the straw have anything to do with why he was nude?

just a guess...

The man made a bet that he could survive in the desert. However, in the desert the temperature drops increasingly low at night. Since he did not have any warm clothes, he suffered hypothermia, which in hypothermia you feel very warm and at peace.
