Suddenly turning towards Jackson, Valerie raised an eyebrow. "Now where are we, oh Great One?" Jackson, finally deciding to not come up with a smart comeback, looked around, mumbling something under his breath then waving them back towards Shadow. "Yeah, I thought so. Idiot!" she shot at him, a fake scowl on her face. However, she let a low chuckle escape her lips and rubbed the back of her neck. "Yeah. I know. It's a long day."
"You're telling me," muttered Jackson, rubbing his eyes.
"Stop it. That's bad for your eyes. It'll irritate them further, too," reprimanded Valerie. The three days that the Patriot Squad hadn't spoken, Valerie had found a rather reliable - and short-tempered - friend in Jackson and, despite their clear animosity towards each other, they were caring. Slapping his hand away, he shouted at her.
"What was that for?"
"I told you that's bad for your eyes," laughed Valerie. As they reached the apartments, she waved. "Oh, oh. Jackson, this is Emili. Emili, this is Jackson. He's in charge of this village-place-thing. He's the one you go to if you need help." Patting Jackson on the back a couple times - "you're nuts - that wasn't a pat that was a full-out slap!" - she grinned. "See you, bud."
"Yeah, yeah." Waving goodbye over his shoulder, he sauntered off easily.
"Well, I don't know about you, Emili, but I'm starving! You know, I can't help but wonder if Ghost Town's surgery went terribly because he ate before? Despite the differences of today's technology from the past's, you still don't eat before surgery - just a precaution."

Emili frowned at the woman after being introduced to Jackson. She said nothing, only nodded at him before he sauntered off. She turned to Dex, the concept of hunger not quite registering. She tilted her head to the side, "I understand that humans need energy from organic substances such as animal mucles and fats as well as plant fibers and fruits." She looked away slightly, "Its just an oddity. I don't know what it feels like to be hungry." She grinned slightly and turned back to Dex, sure now that she understood, "When you get hungry, does a warning flash across your vision in red with the words, 'Low on energy. Recharge needed.'?" Emili's mouth turned up in to a smile, she was certain this was how humans knew they were hungry, that's how she knew anyway.

"Uhm... not really," giggled Valerie, easily climbing the stairs. Thinking about it for a moment, she decided. "Well, your stomach feels empty, and if you're hungry enough you can actually feel nauseous... And your stomach makes funny noises." In the silence, Valerie's stomach growled. Giggling like a little girl, she patted her stomach. "Like that. I mean, it's mostly a feeling though. You just know you're hungry. I mean, I know what you're getting at and sometimes I wish that would happen, but it's a feeling." Rubbing the back of her neck, she shrugged. She didn't say it, but it hung in the air. It's something human.

Emili tilted her head to the side, "A feeling?" She remembered that she had felt various things since she had come to inhabit this machine body. She had felt her circuits jump as if her heart had skipped a beat. She had felt heat rise in her sensors when she was embarrassed. She knew what it 'felt' like to touch things, her sensors allowed for the transfer of knowledge from her fingers to her motherboard or in human terms, her brain. However, instead of these things actually being felt, they were translated as information across her vision. A series of zeros and ones telling her that a certain part of her host body was experiencing an anomaly. This was strange since it was similar to how she read the sensors aboard the Panthera, and yet it was different. It wasn't an indifferent sort of knowledge that passed through the AI core onboard the ship. This was person, a singular experience that was meant for her. It was confusing and scary. Emili pondered these things for a time without saying a word. She felt a silence stretch between her and Dex, but she had no concept of it being awkward. Instead she looked up at the woman, her soft blue eyes almost sad, "Sadly, I will never understand such a thing. That is a right reserved for humans."

Placing a gentle hand on Emili's shoulder, she offered a soft smile. "Yes, but there's a lot of things that you get to avoid not being human. You know, being human is great and all but... Emotions get in the way sometimes, yeah?" Opening the door to her apartment, Valerie sighed. "You can stay here if you want. I'm just making myself something to eat. Maybe Ghost Town or Sheperd will stop by." Leaving the door ajar for Emili if she wished to enter, she began preparing her food and turned on the stove.

Emili frowned softly. Emotions... Dex had no idea how valuable such things were. Though Emili was only an AI, she understood loyalty and the feeling of protectiveness. She had only felt the shells of emotions that real humans had, and she often hungered for more. Sometimes it surprised her about how much she wanted to feel like a human did, she'd tried to keep them in check but to no avail. Instead she let the ghost versions of emotions pass through her, only being able to taste, but drink her fill of them. Like being able to taste the sweetest of a lovely nectar, but never to quench her thirst for it.
Emili would have sighed if she could, but with her lack of lungs, she did not. She entered Dex's apartment and sat upon her couch. The AI thought over the encounter they had had with Jackson. After a moment Emili inquired, "What did you mean Dex?" She turned to the woman. She frowned, "I mean about how 'even he shouldn't care'?" Emili searched her memory banks and found the file she was searching for. She processed it for a moment before replaying the words to Dex. Emili opened her mouth and Dex's voice resounded from the AI's throat, exactly as the woman had said it, "Don't care. Don't worry - okay? Nobody needs to care. Nobody. Not even him." The same disgust that had been in Dex's voice could be heard in Emili's recording. The only eerie thing was that Emili's face remained impassive, as if she wasn't aware that her mouth was moving and words were being spoken. After she had spoken the segment she had asked about, Emili fell silent. Her eyes wide in curiosity.

Allowing an awkward silence take its place, Valerie finally cleared her troat and felt the tips of her ears heat up. Humming to take up time, she placed the dirty dishes in the sink and took her plate into the living room. Sitting next to Emili on the couch, she took a bite of her sandwich then chewed thoughtfully. "Uhm... well, what I meant was. Uh." At a loss for words she decided to eat again. "I meant... Well, Ghost Town? Yeah. Him." Going silent again, she ate in silence. "He treats me like I'm five. I also don't know what he expects from me so I tend to act stupid around him... Uh, just forget I said anything. Ghost Town is just... You know... Uh..." Finally deciding that her face was red enough, she went silent. Then remembering something, she looked slowly to Emili, "Did you shut the door?"

Emili listened intently, trying to decipher Dex's mutterings. When she finally started talking about Ghost Town, one of Emili's brows lifted. She looked away for a moment. She had seen the way Dex's face had turned red, and Emili's thermal scanners allowed her to observe that Dex had turned to an overall bright red splotch. Emili quickly turned off the thermal scanner so that Dex wouldn't blind her sensors. She was about to reply, 'Actually I don't know.' When Dex asked about the door. Emili quickly looked at the opening and saw that she had not actually done so. The AI frowned, "My sincerest apologizes Agent Dex." She stood and walked with purpose to the door. She stood in the doorway, her hand on the doorknob. Turning back Emili spoke, "Am I making you uncomfortable with my questions? I shall leave if you wish it."

"Ah, no, no!" quickly replied Valerie with a nervous laugh. "Not at all. I just didn't want a certain someone to listen in on us," murmured Valerie, quietly chewing her food. Finishing quickly, she stood and rinsed her dish off, leaving it in the sink to be put away later. Sitting back down, she smiled nervously to Emili. Tapping her lip for a second, Valerie opened her mouth as if to speak, then closed it again quickly. "Actually, your questions do make me uncomfortable but they're helpful because it's breaching a topic that I've been skirting around for a while." Rubbing the back of her neck, she brought her knees up to her chest as she hummed in thought. "Mostly about my feelings towards Ghost Town, yeah? I'm not sure what they are anymore. They're professional border-line affectionate. They don't really make sense anymore."
